AAPSU demands enquiry into violence during ANSU election

ITANAGAR, Feb 22:  Recent ANSU election held at Seppa town witnessed violence incident as clashes broke out between students and police resulting in injuries from both side. The entire voting process passed off without any incident. But during the counting of votes on 20th evening suddenly all hell broke down when miscreants started pelting stone and firewood into auditorium of Seppa Government Higher Secondary school where votes were being counted.

Even paramilitary forces (CRPF) deployed there received injuries.  Seeing situation going out of control, CRPF resorted to lathi-charge resulting in injury to many innocent students. More than 150 vehicles were damaged in the clash.

Meanwhile AAPSU President Takam Tatung, who was the chief election commissioner for ANSU election held at Seppa expressed deep regret over the incident.  “The entire election process was going on very smoothly. In fact students of all the Nyishi dominated districts were very patient and always cooperative with us. But evil design of some anti-social elements lead to this violent incident,” said Tatung. He also questioned the security preparedness of administration.  “On 14th of this month AAPSU had written to Chief Secretary to arrange additional forces for ANSU election. But when we inquired, district administration told us that no additional forces were deployed. Because of the shortage of security forces this violent incident took place,” stated Takam Tatung. He has sought an inquiry into this incident.  “Chief Secretary should form a fact finding committee to probe this incident. The entire election process was going smoothly, only when counting was about to over that this violence broke out. Government should find out the persons responsible for such ugly incident,” said Tatung. He also demanded that district administration should compensate all the vehicle owners whose cars were damaged during the violence on 21st evening. “In the students’ union election always there will be some slight misunderstanding which results in minor clashes. But this incident shocked everyone and many innocent people were beaten up and their vehicle damaged. This happened because of the failure of district administration and they should compensate every vehicle owners,” stated Takam Tatung. Meanwhile it has been informed that new ANSU team will take over the charge from 1st of March.

ANSU election -- an eye opener for Nyishi community

Taba Ajum

ITANAGAR, Feb 22: In Arunachal student bodies like AAPSU and several other community and district based students unions have always earned lot of respect from people of this state.  In absence of any major opposition political parties, people of this state always pinned hope on these student bodies to fight against corrupt system. It is this aura about student union which forced this journalist to visit Seppa town to witness election for All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU).

Beautiful Seppa town situated along the bank of Kameng River was the venue for ANSU election.  I along with few more media friends reached there on February 17th evening. Moment we reached Seppa, there was huge traffic jam all over the town. I was thinking Seppa visit could spare me from ever increasing traffic of capital. But to our utter shock more than two thousand vehicles poured in carrying various students from all the Nyishi inhabited districts. My local host who is a well respected circle officer of East Kameng district told me, “I have never seen so much of vehicle in Seppa. Even during MP or MLA election, Seppa town never witnessed vehicle movement of this magnitude.”

My second observation was that ANSU elections are usually being held for providing a platform to the Nyishi students of different districts to interact with each other. But here every candidate had set up their own camp and supporters were confined to their respective camp. Surprisingly, there was no interaction between various students and a general feeling emerged was that the motive behind organizing such election has been killed. What is the need of organizing such confluence of Nyishi students, when there is no interaction and exchange of ideas among themselves?

Akin to the assembly election, money ruled this ANSU election too. Just a day before voting money was flowing in Seppa town as smoothly as Kameng River. It was sad to see school and college students running behind money so desperately. If a school or college student starts taking money to vote in a student body election, then what will be the condition of Arunachal in years to come? Youths are considered to be the future of this state and if same youths grow corrupt mentality from now, then even almighty wont be able to save Arunachal Pradesh. Though it was supposed to be student body election but people from every walk of life were deeply involved in the election process.

Student unions are always considered to be the first stage to groom future leaders. But if there is so much involvement of money from grass root level, then for sure future of the state will not look bright.  It’s hard to blame any individual but this election should be an eye opener for senior figures of Nyishi community. There is an urgent need for introspection among the community. Nyishi Elite Society (NES), the highest forum of Nyishi community should intervene and try to find a way out. The election of student union should confide to student communities only. It is high time Nyshi community go for a soul searching.

Preparation for XXVth NE Games  in West Kameng

BOMDILA, Feb 22: With hardly less than two months left for the XXVth North-east games to be held in Arunachal Pradesh, a co-ordination meeting was held today at Bomdila,in West Kameng district.

The XXVth North-east games to be conducted in the district would comprise of  11 disciplines viz- Archery, Athletics, Football, Weight lifting, Taekwondo, Boxing, Karate, Wushu, Judo , Badminton and Table Tennis. Of these, 7 disciplines would be conducted at Dirang; an independent ADC post in the district having almost all the infrastructures required for the mega event & two each at Rupa and Bomdila. The six day long mega event would commence from 15th of April and a total of 1684 athletes including the team and technical officials are expected to participate in this 25th edition from all over the eight north-east states. Participation from the 5-Mtn division and other armed forces in due course of time is also expected.

Chairing the meeting, Parliamentary Secretary for Sports & Youths affairs, Wangki Lowang exuded confidence in the district administration and the officers of the district and hoped that the mega event would be conducted successfully with the active co-operation from the local legislators of the district. It’s a matter of honor and great pride  to conduct the North-east games for the third time in the state but we should be focused on the major thrust  areas like that of the requisite infrastructures, accommodation facilities, transportation, entertainment programmes ,cleanliness aspect etc well in advance, he said.

Reiterating on the need of judicious use of the fund allotted, Lowang advocated for scam free conduct of the games and to project a clean and clear image of the district and the state. As very little has been allocated at the moment for conduct of the mega event, he suggested for roping in potential sponsors from the hydro power developers operating in the district.

Parliamentary Secretary for HPD R.T Khunjuju, MLA Phurpa Tsering  and MLA Kumsi Sidisow while welcoming the mega event to be hosted by the district, assured every possible help for its successful conduct. Underscoring the need for adequate funding in order to meet up the minimum required expenses of the games, MLA Phurpa called for equitable distribution of fund against each discipline in order to maintain financial discipline. He also opined that, the state government could also be approached for financial assistance.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Rinchin Tashi, assured successful conduct of the games but cautioned against financial mismanagement. The fund so received from the Sports Authority of India ( SAI ), from the state government or say from the sponsors should be used optimally and every penny should be properly accounted for, he added. Later in the open house discussion, DC Tashi suggested for decentralizing the composition of certain committees which were rather fully centralized. This would facilitate for the easy and effective conduct of the games, he said. Further, formations of local sub-committees are required where the different events are to be held, he added.

Concluding the deliberations, Director Sports & Youths affairs D.K Dinglow urged the works departments to ensure timely completion of the various infrastructures and other maintenance works. DIPRO

Appreciation

Dear Editor,

This letter is to appreciate the article on Arunachal Pradesh police department ( Feb 19). It is stimulating and inspiring to know that our police department have taken such a step to maintain transparency. It is not only fueling the light of hope in many of us but also building back the trust and faith in our bureaucratic recruitment system. Also giving out contact numbers where one can directly address problems,  I believe, is  a major endeavor for maintaining transparency. I sincerely hope that other departments also follow such initiatives for transparency and accountability.

Good road link essential for development

Dear Editor,

Through your daily I would like to realize the people about the importance of roads. Roads are the vital lifelines of the economy making possible trade and commerce. Roads are most preferred modes of transportation and considered as one of the cost effective modes of transportation. Roads are easily accessible to each individual. Roads facilitate movement of both men and materials anywhere within a country. It helps in socio-economic development as well as brings national integration. It provides linkages to other modes of transportation like railways, airways, and shipping, etc. An efficient and well-established network of roads is desired for promoting trade and commerce in any country and also fulfills the needs of a sound transportation system for sustained economic development. Road transport is contributing 3.69% to GDP where as all transportation modes are contributing a total of 5.5% to GDP of our country.

Good roads are essential for the development of a country,  good roads help people to travel easily to places where they can work and to develop their lands and industries. In Malaysia, for example, the improvement of roads has made it easy for skilled workers from the towns to work in remote villages. The people of the villages, on the other hand, have been able to learn much from the towns. As a result, there has been a lot of improvement in this country in all spheres of activity.

Finally, in times of war, good roads help armies to move about without difficulty. Sometimes, a country is defeated because its army is not able to reach a place in good time due to bad roads. Even the police may not be able to reach a place where there is some trouble if the roads are bad.

For all these reasons, it is always necessary for a country to have good roads.

A ray of hope

Dear Editor,

It is frustrating to overview the corruption prevailing in our state. People are becoming so ignorant about their duties, they are simply enthusiast with making money by hook or crook. It is frustrating again to see the duty being performed by the politician and high officials of our state.

I am confused, why these politicians and high-ranking officials do interfere in recruitment process, whether these politicians don’t even know that by doing such mal-practices they are gaining only few votes but on the other  hand, they are  losing or alienating large amount of votes by showing corrupt images. They shouldn’t forget that they are at that position because of we the general public and  the public know everything. Similarly high ranking officials are also losing their respect by  involving in mal-practices.

They should understand how miserable the life for  being  unemployed and  how hard to get money to apply and appear in various job interview.. Many of aspiring unemployed come from other districts to Itanagar just to appear in recruitment process by spending their hard earned money,  but such recruitment  process  holds no good for the poor unemployed youth due to corruption.

In the given situation, it is very pleasure to see the steps initiated by DIG Robin Hibu to check the corruption during recruitment process of police personnel. Other departments should take inspiration from our first IPS officer Robin Hibu and show some fairness in selection process.

We need salary

Dear Editor,

In the recent past, government issued an order for enhancement of SSA teachers’ salary, but till date we are yet to get our monthly salary.

When we enquired about salary for the month of January, we were  told  about paucity of  fund indicating that there will be no salary in the month of February.

It is known to all, including the state Govt that  SSA teachers are rendering dedicated service despite meagre salary.

Therefore we would like to request all the principals and headmasters to put pressure on Govt, for, no one can work  with empty stomach. At the same time,  we request the authorities to release our salary at the earliest.

It is a dangerous game

Dear Editor,

This is in reference to Suraj Saraf's article "Look Good, Go Places"(19 February).

It is extremely unfortunate that we are living in such a society and age where people are urged to "look good", instead of "be good"! Actually, if we are encouraged to "be good", it would not benefit the  ever-burgeoning beauty and cosmetic industry a bit. Thus it is being constantly beamed that only a fair skin, groomed hair and glowing face would help individuals to succeed in life!

By indulging in such crude form of brain-washing the public; the vested interests are not only practicing apartheid based on physical features, they are also playing a very dangerous game of imparting an inferiority complex to those who are not physically attractive or can't afford the highly-expensive facials, manicure etc. because of poverty.

It is high time the social scientists, teachers and the opinion-makers of the society call the bluff of the cosmetic industry and raise awareness that one's beauty lies in his/her brains, intellect, thought-process, work, honesty, dignity and only sky is the limit for those who possess these traits.
